2. Importing Images To Library

One of the first steps in creating a new Flash animation is to add elements to Library. Then you will define them as graphics, movies, buttons or leave them as bitmap graphics. Your Library may have lots of images, movies, sounds, components but only the elements on the canvas will count in the exported .swf file size. If you have lots of elements in your library the .fla file will be bigger.

In Flash you import to library bitmap graphics (images), movies or sounds but on the canvas it is recommended to work with symbols - movies, graphics or buttons - (components in which you place your raw elements) because you'll generate a smaller .swf file.

Open the file index.fla from template/flash.

To import new files to library go to the main menu and choose File -> Import to Library

Note that if you import a file with the same name as one already existing in your library Flash will ask you if you want to replace that file in the library. Replacing a file in the library automatically replace the file in all movies, graphics or buttons symbols that contain that file:

Now take a look at the Library:

As you can see you have different kind of elements: Bitmap (imported files), Movie Clip (Symbol), Button (Symbol), Sound (imported file) and so on. To place an object from the library to canvas simply drag that element to canvas and it will be placed in a keyframe of the current layer.
