A seating layout template is a very efficient way to communicate between groups, a predefined order that would ensue peaceful functioning of the system in place. For school children, especially in the pandemic, it is essential that certain health regulations are followed. To make sure that the students promptly obey it, school buses should have adequate seating charts.
This document is an attempt to narrow down and find templates that have an all-in-one design for the user. The first criteria for a template is for it to be in a good readable format. Negative space is extremely important so that required information can be added without making the form look messy. A general range for the bus sizes was made, because of absence of this particular information. Another thing to be kept in mind, is that one can recreate most of these designs, combine them with other features and improved by graphics if desired.
What all features need to be included in a bus design template?
A good seating template must include designated cubes or blanks for student names. Along with that, there should be space for students to fill in more information, such as phone number. The seating template must have blanks for administrative purposes. Things like date of schedule, bus number, bus route, driver name, are details that should be handy. The design of the template should make it easier to read. There shouldn’t be unnecessary graphics on it, but a colored page that doesn’t distract the viewer from the actual information is encouraged.
What one should aim for here, is an eye catching clean design with text format that compliments the design. The structuring of most the layouts is similar, with certain administrative blanks like bus number, route, date. What differentiates them is how it is presented. Merits and demerits of each layout have been described right above the picture.
Bus seating capacity: more than 50 seats and less than 80 seats
Basic designs that cater to a huge capacity bus size
This is the basic design for a higher seat capacity bus. The checks or seat spaces have limited space which would not accommodate a lot of student details. However, for the seat allocation information, this template should suffice.

As was the case for seating capacity of 50-80, I have chosen templates that satisfy a set of characteristics. These characteristics include visual appeal, information space, administrative information space, and an overall uncluttered design.
Incorporating graphics in templates:
When combined with good graphics, a template can become highly efficient as it provides a visual attractiveness which students are less likely to neglect than pure text.
The next few templates are examples of graphics incorporated in templates. It however runs the risk of appearing cluttered if more than student name is written on the template. This template is ideal for a high capacity bus and provides space for assigning dates to the allocations as well. But this can be a pitfall with designer templates that need to be avoided.

The fourth template showcases efficient use of design. This template is more eye catching, but does not have a lot of space for information other than student name. The colors work in an advantage and compliment the font as well.
Example Template #4

This is more of a blank canvas template. The seating capacity is not predefined and it has enough space to put student information. The bus seating template has blanks for additional information however, the format is more for a filed trip. Layout has been structured to indicate that this template is meant for a multifunctional school activity bus, hence the field trip space.

Efficient use of color:
Unlike a template involving graphics, a template that has color to it would never look cluttered. These templates also provides an eye-catching written space. It essentially combines the best features of all the above templates. An example for the same is below.
The seating capacity is adequate and can be cropped out if necessary. The problem that is visible in this template is that the size of the block might not suffice the information requirements.

Using a clean design for the templates
Using a design that is efficient doesn’t require graphics or colors necessarily. The next three templates are prime examples of how a design in itself can be eye catching. These templates are extremely structures and would leave no space for errors or confusions if filled correctly. They are also the most editable.
Example Template #7

Template six has the most space for student information spaces. It has good seating capacity and while might not appear visually attractive, it is extremely practical. It also has designated space for admin information. The sheet might take the most physical space, but is the most systemized out of all the other templates. Because of its standard design, the seating capacity can be cropped out, however it has its own seat numbering system which will have to be manually edited. The editing is possible on any open source editing software like Canva.
Example Template #8

This template is the most formal of all templates that I found online. It has a good structure, clean design, sufficient space and a very readable format. This is for a low seating capacity bus. The print quality is extremely well. If your bus structure matches the structure presented here, this is the best format in the mix that I have presented. While it does not have any graphics, it catches the eye because of its neatness. There is sufficient space for admin questions and extra space for any other information the user might want to add.

Exploring a more simplistic pattern of layouts:
Having an open ended approach to creating your bus seating layouts can serve the purpose just as well. However in those cases, it is necessary that a certain standardization is followed. For example, template 10 and 11 which are shown below.
They do not have any particular seating codes and have ample space for student names and information. They are adequately sized and have a very clean design. However, neither of the templates have any designated areas for admin information. Information like school name, bus route and date would have to be added by the person using these templates will either have to edit it using editing software or add it manually.

Example Template #11

A common drawback for both these templates is how cluttered they will look once the information is filled. Another drawback is that the seats have codes that might not be appropriate for the required seating layout of your bus, but this is editable. The print is readable and the design is very simplistic. But the format cannot be cropped because of the design of these form.
The twelfth template is very similar to an Excel bus seating layout. Spacious boxes provide ample space to fill in data, there are blanks for extra information, the sheet has enough negative space to do modifications either manually or digitally. There is no codification in the template for the seats which gives this template a slight advantage compared to other templates in the mix. The form is pretty self-explanatory which will provide convenience when used. The seats are also in a good range for smaller busses and the form is crop able without causing any structural issues.
Example Template #12

This template is more generalized and I have included it here because it can cater to all sizes. The layout ignores the seating capacity of every seat and instead treats them as rows. Effectively, this design is open-ended. You can add negative space when printing it, and the blocks are sufficiently spaced to include substantial amount of details. This format is crop-able, and the text font and size makes it very readable.
Example Template #13

A fun template in this document, this layout is very eye catching and suitable for busses for students of smaller classes, such as primary school, probably up to third grade. It is very eye catching, has a lot of space, but has the smallest seating capacity. The form, due to its graphic design isn’t very editable. But spaces have been left for necessary information to be added as need be. A merit to this template is that it can be used alongside other templates as a visual aid. If we were to combine a sheet with this visual next to it, it can solve the spacing problem and be visually appealing.

Alternative designing ideas:
Creative designing of the form itself is also an approach that can be adopted. The last two templates are added here to show more designing horizons with seating plans for buses of small capacity. Both the formats are reader friendly. They have a lot of space, and highly editable and have a combination of visual and textual combination. Like other formats, they have blank spaces for admin information. The design is more sensitive to the number of seats, and you can crop it for the required seat number.

None of the above templates combine everything. While some have structured layouts and adequate spacing, they might not be eye catching. The ones that visually appealing, might not be as formal as desired. Or not provide space for student information. Hence a combination of the templates or editing according to particulars might be needed.
Dos and Don’t of making your own school bus seating layout template:
Since none of the above templates necessarily combine all aspects of what should be included in a seating layout, some rules of thumb to keep in mind are:
- Do not optimize for design, when a crisp layout can do the job.
- Make the reading area the center of attention by using colors that compliment the text.
- If you don’t want color, then make sure the reading areas is extremely systematic.
- Negative spacing for personalized additions is a must.
To conclude, the design that did come the closest to the above suggestions, is template 9. While it might not accommodate the needs of a high capacity bus, it is a good reference point to start with.
